Enhancing Digital Safety for People with People
Privacy and security risks are not merely the result of technical flaws, but of deeper failures that have effectively excluded stakeholders from the design process. This exclusion has produced privacy, security, and policy artifacts that fail to address people’s needs, leaving society exposed to consequential risks. As AI technologies become the new “technology,” there is mounting evidence that current digital safety and policy guardrails are insufficient to protect users. These failures are particularly critical in domains such as health and wellness and embodied systems, where risks extend beyond digital harm to affect users’ physical safety and well-being. In this talk, I will discuss how I leverage a highly interdisciplinary, human-centered approach to advance digital safety and AI governance in high-impact AI systems, including conversational AI for mental health and social robots.
